Why are PCBS green? What are the components on the PCB?

PCB is ubiquitous, widely used in communications, medical, industrial control, automotive, military, aviation, aerospace, consumer and other industries. In all kinds of electronic products, PCB, as the main component of product hardware, plays an indispensable role.

Why are PCBS green?

If you are careful, you may find that most PCBS are green (black, blue, red and other colors are less), why is this? Actually, the circuit board itself is brown. The green color we see is the solder mask. Solder resistance layer is not necessarily green, there are red, yellow, blue, purple, black and so on, but green is the most common.

As for why to use green solder layer, there are mainly the following:

1) Green is less stimulating to eyes. Since childhood, the teacher told us that green is good for eyes, protect eyes and fight fatigue. Production and maintenance personnel are not easy to eye fatigue when staring at PCB board for a long time, which will cause less eye damage.

2) Lower cost. Because in the process of production, green is the mainstream, the purchase amount of natural green paint will be larger, the purchase cost of green paint will be lower than other colors. At the same time when mass production using the same color paint can also reduce the cost of wire changing.

3) When the board is welded on SMT, it should go through tin and post pieces and the final AOI verification. These processes should be calibrated by optical positioning, and the identification effect of the instrument is better if there is a green background.

How is PCB designed?

To manufacture a PCB, the layout of the PCB must be designed first. PCB design needs to rely on EDA design software tools and platforms, such as Cadence Allegro, Mentor EE, Mentor Pads, Altium Designer, Protel, etc. At present, due to the continuous miniaturization, precision and high speed of electronic products, PCB design not only needs to complete the circuit connection of various components, but also needs to consider various challenges brought by high speed and high density.

The basic process of PCB design is as follows: preliminary preparation →PCB structure design →PCB layout design →PCB constraint setting and wiring design → wiring optimization and screen printing placement → network DRC inspection and structure inspection →PCB board making.
